| Biography: |
| Steve Smith stepped in as a true freshman
in 2003 and ended up positioning himself as a viable number 3 receiver behind incumbents Keary Colbert and Mike Williams. He finished the year with 17 catches for 319 yards and 2 touchdowns. Smith was worked slowly into the lineup and game plan. Trojan fans caught glimpses of Steve in his first few games as he registered his first collegiate reception for 7 yards in his first game (at Auburn), ran one time for 8 yards against BYU, caught one pass for 9 yards at Cal, and another pass for 17 yards at Notre Dame. However, in the 9th game of the season, a must-win against Washington State, Steve showed the all out ability SC supporters had been waiting for. A quick slant and a 55-yard dead sprint left the Trojans with 6 points and the promise of a brilliant future at the wide receiver position. Smith continued to impress throughout the remaining games, catching 2 passes for 54 yards at Arizona, 4 for 27 against UCLA, and then decided to host his own coming out party against Oregon State. In that game, Steve caught 5 passes for 136 yards,
including a 73 yard touchdown strike. In 2004, Steve Smith will look to step in for a departed Keary Colbert and fortify the wide receiver position. |
