| Nov. 6 - Tues. | Athletes in Action | Box Score; Recap | W 100-81 |
| CJ looks ready for his All-American pre-season status - 23 points and 6 assists in only 25 minutes. C-Bo also looked ready to step it up with 10 points and 9 boards in 21 minutes. Frosh JC started and contributed 14 points and a couple of spectaculat moves. Team defense looked suspect! | |||
| Nov. 12 - Mon. | EA Sports All-Stars | Box Score; Recap | W 114-65 |
| Break-out game for Josh Childress - 22 points (10-13 from floor), 6 boards and several high-light reel moves. Julius also had a good night with 13 points and 4 assists. CJ was a little off but still finished with 21 points. Next game counts! | |||
| Nov. 17 - Sat. | @ New Mexico | Box Score; Recap | W 81-66 |
| Impressive opening victory at intimidating road venue by young Cardinal squad. With Casey having a semi-off-night shooting (although he still managed 17 points and a team-high 8 assists), everyone stepped up and contributed: C-Bo (17 points, 11 boards), Justin (10 points, 8 boards, several spactacular dunks), Josh (12 points off some smooth moves), Tony (13 huge 2nd half points, no TO's) and Julius (only 5 points but very steady PG play). Defense looked much better than in the exhibition games. | |||
| Nov. 20 - Tues | Southern Utah | Box Score; Recap | W 81-62 |
| The Thunderbirds were an extremely well-coached team and gave the Cardinal all they could h-andle. The final score is not indicative of how competitive this game was. Southern Utah's aggressive 1-1-3 zone gave the Stanford players (especially Casey) fits for most of the contest. In the end, the T-birds were not tall and deep enough and the Cardinal ended up at the charity stripe 39 times (and making 31 of them - 80%!). C-Bo had another double-double (15/11) and Casey still got his 23 points. Super frosh Josh Childress again played like a veteran, hitting some big buckets and finishing with 13 points. Tony did not score but added a career-high 8 assists. With foul-plagued Justin Davis on the bench, Nick Robinson gave Monty some quality minutes and the 4 and made all 8 of his free throws. Good solid early season victory for the Trees! | |||
| Nov. 24 - Sat. | vs. Purdue (@ Ind.) | Box Score; Recap | W 78-62 |
| Stanford dominated Purdue at the Wooden Tradition in an impressive effort. Phenom frosh Josh Childress scored 21 points with an arsenal of dunks and eye-popping athletic moves. C-Bo recorded a career-high 20 rebounds and completely dominated the Boilermakers in the paint. CJ got his 26 points but continues to struggle from outside. In fact, the Cardinal did not make one 3-point FG in the contest. Justin Davis had foul trouble, once again, and only played 14 minutes. Rob Little and Nick Robinson filled in capably. Point guard position is still questionable and by committee. Julius ran the offense well but took some ill-advised shots. Tony picked up his dribble too many times and Chris Hernandez does not look comfortable as of yet. Still, a very strong W in a tough environment! | |||
| Dec. 1 - Sat. | vs. Texas (@ Chicago) | Box Score; Recap | L 75-83 (OT) |
| Poor free-throw shooting coupled with foul-problems for C-Bo caused the Cardinal to drop its first non-conference regular season game in 3 years. Casey had a very rough outing, making only 3 of 17 shots from the floor. The team missed 15 of 25 free throws. J-Chill led the way with 15 points and Julius contributed 13. Freshman Rob Little played a strong game, scoring 11 points and pulling down 5 rebounds. In limited minutes, C-Bo still had a team-best 11 boards. Julius hit two clutch shots at the end of regulation to force overtime but C-Bo fouled out and the Longhorns dominated the extra session. | |||
| Dec. 15 - Sat. | Long Beach State | Box Score | W 94-77 |
| After a two-week layoff, the Cardinal looked rusty and managed only a 2-point lead at halftime. Things improved in the second half and Stanford cruised to an easy 17 point victory. Once again, C-Bo was the star, scoring 25 points (on 10 of 11 shooting) and pulling down 14 boards. He now leads the nation in rebounding! Casey rebounded after his tough game in Chicago to score 23 points on 7 for 14 shooting from the floor. Julius Barnes had an excellent game, scoring 11 points on a perfect 5 of 5. Teyo made his season debut for hoops and a couple of buckets in only 7 minutes. | |||
| Dec. 18 - Tues | Belmont | Box Score | W 97-63 |
| A hard practice probably would have benefited the Stanford players more than this lopsided victory over a very unimpressive Belmont team. Casey got his stroke back by hitting 6 of 8 from downtown and racked up 25 points. C-Bo had 19 points and 7 boards in only 21 minutes. Chris Hernandez's improvement continued and he scored 10 points. Julius had 9 but looked impressive and comfortable. | |||
| Dec. 19 - Wed | Portland State | Box Score; Recap | W 87-63 |
| The Cardinal played one of its worst halves in recent memory in the first half and were nursing a slim 4-point lead at intermission. The sloppiness continued early in the 2nd half before Stanford pulled away. Casey scored 19 after half-time to finish with 24 points. Julius Barnes got the start at shooting guard and responded with a career-high 16 points and was named to the all-tournament team (along with C-Bo and CJ, the MVP). Childress scored 12 off the bench but Justin Davis, once again, struggled on offense and only had one rebound. Hard to fathom! Unless we get some real teams in here next year, let's hope someone pulls the plug on this pathetic Invitational. | |||
| Dec. 22 - Sat. | vs. BYU (@ Las Vegas) | Box Score; Recap | L 76-81 |
| One of the worst hoops efforts by Stanford in recent memory will go down as a 81-76 loss to an unproven BYU team. Only Casey was a consistent threat, but he had to take a lot of shots to tally a career-high 28 points. Justin Davis finally woke up and scored a personal best 19 points and 10 rebounds. The point guard situation is a mess and former super-frosh Josh Childress is MIA (zero points - did he make the trip to Vegas?). Near term prognosis looks bleak with tough game against Michigan State, then two games versus kal before road trip to Oregon. Leadership and heart needs to show! | |||
| Dec. 29 - Sat. | vs. Mich. State (Oakland) | Box Score; Recap | W 75-64 |
| The Cardinal bounced back from a lackluster performance against BYU to play its best game of the season in defeating Michigan State 75-64. Stanford remained unbeaten in its Pete Newell Challenge history. C-Bo led the way with 27 points and 10 rebounds while Julius Barnes had 19 points on 7 of 9 shooting. Casey had another rough outing, scoring a mere 10 points while shooting 3 of 11 from the floor. Justin Davis contributed 12 points and 4 boards as Stanford pulled the game out in the last 4 minutes. The Spartans had enjoyed a lead for most of the time for the first 3/4 of the game. The bench only contributed 7 points. A great non-conference win for the Cardinal as it heads into conference play. | |||
| Jan. 4 - Fri. | kal | Box Score; Recap; JB's Big Night | W 82-62 |
| Stanford continued its dominance over its "rival" with an impressive 82-62 victory. Julius Barnes had a break-out performance with 27 points (career-high), 5 assists and 3 steals. JB played the point guard position during the Cardinal's decisive 22-4 run in the 2nd half. Bench-play was also key as Josh Childress poured in 13 points and Matt Lottich scored a career-high 12 points in only 10 minutes of play. CJ and C-Bo only combined for 16 points (half their combined average) but Curtis did pull down 8 boards. The first half was ragged and Stanford led by only 34-31 at the break. | |||
| Jan. 6 - Sun. | @ kal | Box Score; No Recap! | L 54-68 |
| Another poor effort by the Cardinal hoops squad, losing ugly to kal at Haas Pavilion, 68-54. Unbelievably, Stanford made only 15 field-goals for the entire game and C-Bo somehow only took four shots from the field. Point guard play from all three who tried that position was horrific. The turnover total was 18 against only 11 assists and the team free-throw shooting was not much better (20 of 34). Casey did manage to score 20 points but he shot only 4 of 13 from the floor. | |||
| Jan. 10 - Thur. | @ Oregon State | Box Score; Recap | W 67-50 |
| The Cardinal got off to its third straight rough start and led only 27-24 at the break. Part of the problem was Casey's foul-situation. He got his third foul with only 7 minutes gone by and had to sit on the bench the rest of the half. Josh Childress came to the rescue by coming off the bench to score a team-high 19 points and grab 9 rebounds. C-Bo started slowly but came on to totally dominate down low (18 rebounds, 17 points). Stanford had a big 22-4 run in the second half to pull away. JB set CJ up for some easy shots and Chris Hernandez steadily manned the point guard position down the stretch. | |||
| Jan 12 - Sat. | @ Oregon | Box Score; Recap | L 79-87 |
| Stanford did not lose on the road all of last season - now we are 0-2 on the road in conference play this year. Oregon is a much-improved offensive-minded team that is playing very well right now. The Cardinal played a decent game but, unfortunately, only two players contributed on the offensive end. Casey (32 points, 12-19 from the floor) and Curtis (29 points, 9 rebounds) both had career-high point totals but no other player scored more than 5 points. Team defense was also a problem - the Ducks got way too many open looks and had little trouble penetrating the middle of the Cardinal defense. | |||
| Jan. 17 - Thur. | Washington St. | Box Score; Recap | W 83-50 |
| Just what the doctor ordered! Who cares that the Cougars area sad-lloking hoops squad? The Cardinal needed a laugher and got it. Stanford's fast-break offense and inside presence was too tall an order for WSU. The Cardinal quickly built a 16-4 cushion and never looked back. Unlike the Oregon loss, Stanford enjoyed balanced scoring (15 for CJ, 15 for Curtis, 12 for JB, 9 for both Justin and Teyo). The defense looked a lot sharper than in recent games, holding the Cougars to only 36% shooting. Now, after 11 straight wins, Stanford finally leads the all-time series against WSU with 53 victories against 52 losses. | |||
| Jan 19 - Sat. | Washington | Box Score; Recap | W 105-60 |
| Once again, the Huskies failed to put up a fight in losing in embarrassing fashion to Stanford, 105-60. The Cardinal has now won the last five meetings between these two schools by an average of 30.5 points. And this latest drubbing was the most one-sided since the series began in 1915. Again, Stanford enjoyed balanced scoring: CJ with 21, C-Bo with 19, JB with 15 (and a team-high 5 assists), Teyo with 11 (in only 11 minutes) and Josh with 10 (and a team-high 8 boards). The entire bench got to play meaningful minutes and walk-on Tyler Besecker even drilled a trey late in the game. On to LA! | |||
| Jan. 24 - Thur. | @ UCLA | Box Score; Recap | W 86-76 |
| Stanford became the first team ever to defeat the Bruins five consecutive times at Pauley Pavilion. A brilliant game by Julius Barnes, who scored 23 points and dished out 4 assists. The game was tight until the last 10 minutes or so when Stanford pulled away. Casey scored 20 points and hit two clutch treys to help build the 2nd half lead but he only hit 6 of 19 from the floor. Josh Childress made a statement about more playing time by scoring 14 points and pulling down a team-high 12 boards. C-Bo had a rather quiet 13 points and 8 rebounds. Rob Little played some solid minutes and contributed 6 crucial points. | |||
| Jan. 26- Sat. | @ U$C | Box Score; Recap | L 82-90 |
| A stiff road assignment became even tougher when it was determined minutes before tip-off that C-Bo would not be able to play (stomach muscle strain from the UCLA game). Still, Rob Little and Joe Kirchofer filled in very capably for Curtis and Stanford played steady basketball while building a 35-22 lead late in the 1st half. Then, it all fell apart. U$C started a swarming, full-court press that Stanford never solved. 27 turnovers later, the Trojans were celebrating a 90-82 victory. The Cardinal surrendered 60 second-half points! This was a complete team loss - everyone contributed, including the coaching staff who did not have the team ready for the press and continues to misuse its personnel. Kirchofer had a career-high 10 points and nine rebounds. Casey wound up with 21 points and 6 assists but also turned it over seven times. Let's hope C-Bo is back for the Arizona games! | |||
| Jan. 31- Thur. | Arizona State | Box Score; Recap | W 90-81 |
| It was all Casey, all the time as he rescued the Cardinal with a spectacular 49-point performance, CJ warmed up with 18 in the 1st half and then scorched the Solar Satans for 31 points after the break. Stanford had an early 9-point lead but wasted it away and found themselves down by 9 with about 15 minutes to go. That's when CJ took over, scoring on virtually every Cardinal possession to secure this very important victory for Stanford. C-Bo returned and scored 10 points (w/ 11 boards) but seemed less than 100%. Julius had another strong performance with 18 points and 4 assists in 39 minutes. Teyo took over the starting job at the 4. | |||
| Feb. 2 - Sat. | Arizona | Box Score; Recap | L 82-88 (OT) |
| Somehow, Stanford found another way to lose to Arizona at home. The Cardinal led most of the way, including a 50-35 advantage a few minutes into the 2nd half. But the Wildcats kept chipping away at the lead and the Stanford offense looked less and less potent down the stretch. As a matter of fact, Stanford scored only one basket in the last 11 minutes of regulation and overtime. Only 8 players got on the floor for the Cardinal as the bench seems to be getting shorter and shorter for Monty. Teyo made his second career start and responded with a career-high 12 points and seven rebounds. C-Bo played a gutty game, scoring 25 points and grabbing a career-high 21 boards. CJ chipped in with 24 points but did not score in the last 10 minutes of play. Julius only scored 7points but played excellent defense against Jason Gardner. | |||
| Feb 7 - Thur. | Oregon | Box Score; Recap | W 90-87 (OT) |
| In a Pac-10 thriller, Stanford pulled out a gut-wrenching OT victory over league-leading Oregon. 90-87. Tony Giovacchini, the unlikeliest of heroes, nailed a three-pointer with 4 seconds to go to send the contest into overtime. Then, in the extra session, he made 3 of 4 free-throws to ice the game. For a second consecutive Thursday night, Casey went off, pouring in 41 points on 14-25 shooting. C-Bo notched another double-double: 24 points nad 15 boards. Joe Kirchofer gave a spark off the bench by scoring 9 points and grabbing 9 rebounds while playing down the stretch and in overtime. Neither team ever lead by more than 5 points in this tight game. | |||
| Feb 9 - Sat. | Oregon State | Box Score; Recap | W 77-55 |
| The Beavers had been smoked in their previous eight games at Maples by an average of 22 points and they lost again by 22 points. However, this game was a bit closer than that for most of the contest as Stanford used a late 22-6 run to put away the game. Curtis was the man again, scoring 20 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. After his inspiring performance against the Ducks, Joe Kirchofer got his first career start. But, in the 2nd half, it was Teyo-time as he drilled two straight treys and scored a career-high 15 points in only 26 minutes. CJ had a quiet 13 points and Julius Barnes added 9 points and some solid defense. Matt Lottich finally got some minutes and scored a quick 5 points. | |||
| Feb 14 - Thur. | @ Washington | Box Score; Recap | W 91-65 |
| Another Thursday night, another Casey showcase game. This time, CJ only went for 31but he has now averaged over 40 points per game in his last 3 Thursdays night Pac-10 games. Stanford pretty much dominated this game throughout although UW pulled to within 4 points early in the second half. But a quick Cardinal scoring barrage put this contest away as Stanford cruised to a 91-65 win. Curtis had 15 points and 16 boards. Teyo (who got the start) chipped in with 9 points and 7 rebounds. Solid defense on the Huskies' leading scorer, Doug Wrenn limited him to 9-of-23 shooting. Freshman Chris Hernandez had perhaps his best game as a Cardinal, scoring 6 points and dishing our 7 assists in only 23 minutes at the point guard position. | |||
| Feb 16 - Sat. | @ Washington St. | Box Score; Recap | W 76-63 |
| Stanford started very slowly in this contest and WSU actually led by 10 in the early going. Hot shooting by Julius Barnes fueled the Cardinal comeback and by half-time, the good guys had a slim 3-point lead. Then, a 17-5 run to open the 2nd half all but clinched this important road victory. Casey (24 points) and C-Bo (19 points, 11 boards) had solid performances, but the other two starters contributed significantly in this win: Julius ended up with 16 points and Teyo had 11 (on 5-of-6 shooting). However, the bench scoring remains a concern. As a group, the reserves shot only 2 of 11 for 6 points. A more consistent team effort is needed against the LA schools! | |||
| Feb. 21 - Thur | U$C | Box Score; Recap | L 58-77 |
| Sam Clancy posted his 11th straight double-double (17/11) as the Trojans smoked Stanford in Palo Alto. CJ led Stanford with 23 points but could not prevent U$C from sweeping the Cardinal for the first time since the 1991/92 season. It was only a 1-point game at halftime but Southern Cal scored the first ten points after intermission and shot 55% in the second half. Meanwhile, Stanford only made 5 of 19 three-point attempts. C-Bo was relatively silent (10 points/6 boards). | |||
| Feb 23 - Sat. | UCLA | Box Score; Recap | L 92-95 |
| The Maples Horror weekend concluded with a sloppy 95-92 loss to UCLA. Dan Gadzuric dominated C-Bo inside, scoring 12 points and pulling down 15 big boards. CJ led the Cardinal in scoring with 24 and Julius Barnes contributed 17 points despite only making 6 of 19 shots from the floor. Back-up point guard Chris Hernandez had his best game as a Cardinal, scoring 14 points (making 4 of 5 from downtown) and dishing out 4 assists. | |||
| Feb 28 - Thur. | @ Arizona | Box Score; Recap | W 76-71 |
| The Card won 76-71 and have now won two straight at McKale after losing 16 of the previous 17 games in Tucson. Stanford bounced back strong after two tough home losses the previous weekend against the LA schools. Curtis Borchardt poured in 28 points (including 6 of 6 free throws in the last 15 seconds) and pulled down 9 boards. Julius Barnes scored 13 huge points despite an ankle injury in the early going. CJ also got banged up (requiring stitches over his right eye) and was held to only 6 points. | |||
| Mar. 2 - Sat. | @ Arizona State | Box Score; Recap | W 81-76 |
| It was back to the CJ-CB show in Tempe for Stanford as Casey scored 19 of his 28 points in the second half and C-Bo had 19 points and 17 boards. JB shook off his ankle sprain to contribute 16 points (4 of 5 from three-point range). Again, the Cardinal made several clutch free-throws down the stretch, including 6 by guard Tony Giovacchini. Stanford outrebounded ASU 47-25 and held the Sun Devils to 38% shooting. | |||
| Mar. 7 - Thur. | U$C (Pac-10 Tourney) | Box Score; Recap | L 78-103 |
| The Trojans slaughtered the Cardinal for a third time this season, shooting 67% in the first half when the game was decided. USC scored a season-high 52 points before intermission and Stanford gave up the most points since 1994. Pac-10 Player of the Year Sam "I am" Clancy scored 25 points and Brandon Granville contributed 20 points and 11 assists. Unbelievably, Stanford held a 51-31 edge in rebounding but Southern Cal dominated in every other phase of the game. C-Bo had 17 points and 14 boards but was not the inside force the Card needed until late in the game when the outcome was already determined. | |||
| Mar. 14- Thur. | Western Kentucky | Box Score; Recap | W 84-68 |
| The Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky proved to have more bark than bite. In a sloppy contest, Stanford led for the vast majority of the game and cruised into the 2nd round of the NCAA tourney for the 8th consecutive year. WK's main weapon, center Chris Marcus picked up two early fouls and only played 3+ minutes in the first half. But C-Bo continued to dominate inside even after intermission, and finished with 19 points and 12 boards. CJ struggled but still put up 17 important points. The Cardinal also got key contributions from CH (11 points, including 8 of 8 from the line), JB (10 points), JC (7 points and 3 rebounds) and Justin Davis (6 points, 3 assists, 2 steals). Matt Lottich, Rob Little and Joe Kirchofer also provided quality minutes off the bench. Even Tyler Besecker got into the action late as MM cleared the bench. | |||
| Mar. 16 - Sat. | Kansas | Box Score; Recap | L 63-86 |
| This one was over almost before it began. Kansas jumped all over the Cardinal beginning with the opening tip. Next thing you knew, it was 15-0. The Cardinal finally scored but a few minutes late, Kirk Hinrich entered the game and his "sprained" ankle was just fine. His mobility seemed 100% and he immediately made a couple of shots. Hinrich finished with 15 points and 8 assists in only 21 minutes. Meanwhile, Nick Collison was having his way with Curtis on the inside, scoring 17 points and pulling down a game-hig 13 rebounds. The deficit was 22 points by halftime and Stanford only got to within 12 points briefly in the 2nd half. Stanford shot a frigid 3 of 22 from 3-point range. CJ missed all 3 of his treys but managed to tally 24 points for the Cardinal. C-Bo had 13 & 11 but was not a factor when the game was in doubt. A tough ending to a rough season. | |||
