'Bama QB Darren Daniel on Card official visit

"I'm at Stanford right now my on official visit," Alabama 2010 quarterback Darren Daniel told TheBootleg.com in a Friday night interview. "It's between Stanford and Western Kentucky."

Darren Daniel reports offers from Stanford, Clemson, Vanderbilt, Troy, UAB and Western Kentucky in the FBS ranks, alongside Georgia Southern, Tennessee State and Alabama State. But he looked to each program's coaching staff in narrowing his list from nine to two.

"Both schools have great head coaches in Coach Taggart and Coach Harbaugh," said Daniel, who first met then-Stanford running back coach Taggart at a Junior Day last year. "And, at Stanford, the education is second to none."

Though Daniel is late to emerge on the radar of recruitniks, Stanford has been in hot pursuit of the 6-foot-3, 185 pound quarterback from Phenix City.

"[Stanford] first emailed me before the season started: they wanted to see my highlight tape, and then they offered me a scholarship," Daniel said. "That was before football season, but during school, so back in August. And I've been talking through email with the staff and they've come to my school to visit. Plus, I came out here [to the Farm] last year on Junior Day."

Daniel, a three-star prospect to Rivals and a two-star prospect to Scout.com, reports that assistant Lance Anderson has visited "quite a few times", while offensive coordinator David Shaw visited last weekend. He also mentioned his interest in Western Kentucky, which is indeed related to Willie Taggart.

"[WKU] offered before [Taggart] went there, but he increased my interest for Western Kentucky. I've only spoken with him once on the phone, and that was last year when he was at Stanford. My official for Western Kentucky is next weekend."

Scouting reports say Daniel is currently more of a raw athlete than a polished quarterback, but Daniel is insistent about what position he wants to play in college: quarterback. He says all the schools recruiting him are aware of his wishes, and are indeed recruiting him as a quarterback.

One topic Daniel was less sure of was Stanford itself. With all his other offers coming from the Southeast, Daniel was as surprised as anyone when the California school initiated contact.

"I thought it was a typo," he said. "I thought it was Samford in Birmingham. But I think Stanford would be a great experience. The distance is far but I'm willing to look past that."

Of course, before Daniel can pledge to Stanford should he so choose, he needs to first get admitted into the University. And as Daniel's finding out, the process is anything but easy.

"The application process is the hardest application out of all the schools I've applied to," Daniel said.

Daniel adds that there are 23 recruits at this visit weekend, and he's hung out some with WR Jarrod West, TE Davis Dudchok and K Jordan Williamson.

Finally, though not technically recruits, winning over parents on official visits is an essential task in many recruiting battles. Daniel reports he brought his parents with him from Phenix City to Stanford, and so far, so good.

"They love it. I think my mom and dad really like it."

Stay tuned to The Bootleg for all the latest from Darren Daniel and the other 22 recruits at this visit weekend as the Feb. 3 Letter of Intent Day draws ever closer.
