Mesa (Az.) Mountain View kicker Matt Gulbrandsen gets preferred walk-on status at BYU

While many D1 prospects are spending this time of year trying to figure which scholarship offer to accept, Mesa (Az.) Mountain View kicker Matt Gulbrandsen actually passed on an Ivy League offer from Harvard to attend his dream school.

This summer Gulbrandsen told Scout.com that he would likely pick between Stanford and BYU as the two seemed to be showing the most interest. Neither ended up offering but BYU remained in his heart and Matt tells Scout.com he will play for the Cougars next year.

He says over the Christmas break, "I decided to 'verbally commit' to BYU after they promised me a spot on their team for the coming fall. They just promised me a spot on the team. No scholarship."

Gulbrandsen (6-1 190) was a 1st team All-5A1 selection by the AzFCA this year for the Toros. He showed a strong leg with 46 of his 48 kickoffs resulting in touchbacks. He connected on 3 of his 7 field goal attempts.
