Special Event: 1972 Rose Bowl Viewing Party
It is
"Big Game Week" and while our ever-rising Cardinal team focuses intensely on getting ready for Saturday's critical
match-up with Cal, we might as well keep our fans' fun rolling on what
would otherwise be a fairly uneventful Wednesday night (other than the Men's
Hoops game against Oral Roberts, a team that features a sophomore guard named
"Beloved Rogers".
Jim Harbaugh is asking "What's
Your Deal?" Well, here is ours! A buddy of ours, Chris McCoy, has a Seattle-based
sports-oriented digital media and broadcasting company called
YourSports.com. The company is developing a model for
making vintage and current sporting events available for viewing and
purchase. Among the services is an innovative concept called
"crowdfunding" which generates and compiles fan viewing
"demand" to facilitate the broadcast of "Tier 2" sporting events
not covered by the mainstream TV networks.
For once, we can announce a very
exciting event taking place this week in downtown Palo Alto - a
special viewing of Stanford's memorable come-from-behind 13-12 victory over the
Michigan Wolverines in the 1972 Rose Bowl.
The
must-see event will be taking place this coming Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at
the Old Pro's, half a block off University Avenue on Ramona
Street in downtown Palo Alto. The action has been slated to begin
at 5:00pm so die-hard Cardinal hoops fans can enjoy the event, order some food and still make it over
to the 7:00pm Men's Basketball Game against Oral Roberts that evening. Admission will be $10.00, payable at
the door. A steal for what should
be a truly great night with fellow fans of Stanford Football!
The legendary
John Ralston, coach of the 1972 Rose Bowl team will be an honored guest in attendance for this special event. HB #32 Reggie Sanderson (a Pasadena native and second-leading rusher in 1972 behind Jackie Brown) and OT Bill
Myers are expected to attend as well, along with other former players. Throw in
Stanford's 2000 Rose Bowl QB and broadcaster Todd Husak and irrepressible Stanford Athletic Hall of Famer Mike Dotterer and you've got a
veritable "Cardinal-palooza!" Stanford Athletics Archivist and Bootleg Editor Jim "Emeritus" Rutter will be on site with a display of vintage '72 Rose Bowl memorabilia!
Come experience (once again or for the very first
time) the thrill of watching (the late,
great) Don Bunce engineer the perfect (5-5) final drive that famously set up Rod Garcia's
game-winning 31-yard field goal with just 12 seconds left. Refresh your fond memories
of Jackie Brown, (the late) John Winesberry, Miles Moore, Bill Scott, Eric Cross, College Football Hall of Famer and First-Team All-American Jeff Seimon, Pete Lazetich, Greg Sampson, James Ferguson, Jim Merlo, Randy Poltl, Charles McCloud, Duf Sundheim, Dennis Sheehan, and the famed "Thunderchicken" defensive front. The amazing 1972 team led the Pacific-8 conference in both total offense AND total defense, which is pretty amazing after losing great players like Heisman winner Jim
Plunkett and Thunderchicken inspiration Dave Tipton.
The Bootleg has been allotted a few "free passes" for
this unique event. I will be posting some trivia questions and will award the
passes to the first Booties to answer correctly.
