Still hyperventilating from the Cardinal's 55-21 demolition of shell-shocked Troy! Here are some quick notes before we head down to Maples for the sure-to-be-memorable victory celebration! Go Cardinal, Beat Cal!
Card
CAN
Drive....55!
"One foot on the brake...and one on the gas!"
Stanford
55
,
USC
21. Drink it in. The most points scored by Stanford in 89 games against the Trojans. In fact, 55 represents the most points
ever
scored on
Troy
. Stanford's largest margin of victory in the 104 years of the too-often lopsided rivalry with the University of Southern California. USC is an amazing
47
-3 in its last 50 games at the Coliseum. Even more amazing: All three losses have come at the hands of the Cardinal! Wow!
The nation's #1 rusher coming into the game at 165 yards per game,
Fresno State
's
Ryan Mathews
, was held to 32 yards on 8 carries tonight after sustaining an injury in the second quarter of a 52-14 loss to
Nevada
!
Behind outstanding work once again from the Tunnel Workers Union offensive line,
Toby Gerhart
ran for 179 on 29 carries and three more TDs, bringing his season total to 19, one off the Stanford single-season record of 20 (Tommy Vardell in 1991)...and #7 still has two big games to go!
It would take a massive finish of 200 yards per game including a bowl, but I guess the boys weren't kidding when they set their crazy-sounding goal of
2,000
rushing yards for Toby at the beginning of the 2009 season. He would need 604 yards in the next three games. Never say never!
By quick count, Toby is still the nation's second-leading rusher at 139.6 yards per game behind Mathews' 149.1 ypg, but Gerhart could take over the rushing yardage lead with a strong game against Cal! It remain to be seen how serous Mathews' injury is. Hopefully not serious. We want to see Toby catch him fair and square.
