In an annual tradition here at The Bootleg, we are proud to announce the 30 finalists for The Bootleg Honor Roll for the 2008/2009 academic year.

The criteria are as follows:
Each academic year, The Bootleg's Honor Roll will recognize the top ten Stanford student-athletes who have performed at an exceptional level, with athletic accomplishments that are both extraordinary and inspirational. While achieving athletic success, these athletes should also have displayed uncommon leadership, sportsmanship and respect towards their fellow teammates and opponents. Finally, these honorees' performances and actions should also demonstrate their love for their particular sport as well as their school pride, the famed “Spirit of Stanford.”

Here are this year’s 30 nominees, listed alphabetically by sport:

Team achievement was rewarded heavily this year, as sports with top-five finishes (or, for spring sports, current rankings) contribute 17 of the 30 student-athletes on our list. Men’s gymnastics captured Stanford’s only national championship this year and rightfully leads the way with three nominees. Meanwhile, other Stanford sports with top-five finishes -- women’s basketball (T3), men’s cross country (third), women’s soccer (third), women’s volleyball (second), water polo (men: second, women: third), swimming (men: third, women: fourth) and softball (currently fifth) contribute another 14 athletes combined.

We did not forget about standout athletes on teams with less than standout seasons, however. Football, lacrosse, field hockey and, in all likelihood, baseball will go playoff-less this season, but those sports contribute six students to the mix. Similarly, five individual sports -- golf, men’s and women’s tennis, fencing and women’s track – each add a student-athlete apiece, as their star shined in spite of a down year from the rest of the squad.

Finally, last but certainly not least are two student-athletes in sports in which the other gender’s squad enjoyed far more success and attention this year. Kawika Shoji and Carli Janiga, we haven’t forgotten that men play volleyball or women compete at gymnastics, and the two juniors round off our list at an even 30.

During the summer months, we will be releasing the 10 winners of this prestigious award, one by one. Stay tuned!
