Women’s Doubles
The Cardinal’s top team of freshman Hilary Barte and sophomore Lindsay
Burdette, ranked ninth in the NCAA, won easily in the first match, 8-1, but the
Aggies won at No. 2 doubles to even things up. There, Christi Liles and
Elze Potgieter rallied to beat senior Whitney Deason and junior Jessica Nguyen,
8-6, leaving it up to senior Celia Durkin and freshman Carolyn McVeigh to
determine the winner of the doubles point. That duo managed to hold off
Stephanie Davidson and Morgan Frank to clinch the doubles point with a strong
finish in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (7-2).
Women’s Singles
After the excitement of the doubles round, singles went more smoothly for the
Cardinal. After skipping singles in the first round to rest a lingering injury,
Barte beat Potgieter at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-2. Anna Blagdarova earned Texas
A&M’s only point of the day with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Durkin at the No. 3
spot. But McVeigh beat Davidson, 6-3, 6-0 in No. 6 singles, and Deason clinched
the victory with a 6-3, 6-3 finish. Nguyen and Burdette were both within a game
of beating their opponents when the Cardinal claimed the win.
Women: Next Up
The victory sends Stanford into the Round of 16, where the Cardinal will face
No. 13 Clemson on Thursday in Tulsa, Okla. The Tigers beat Winthrop and Michigan
in the first two rounds and are currently on a twelve-match winning streak
dating back to March 22. Carol Salge was named the Most Valuable Player three
weeks ago in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament, which Clemson won as the
fourth seed.
Thursday’s winner will face either Baylor or Miami in the quarterfinals next
Saturday.
Once the women’s team tournament is over, Barte and Nguyen will play in the
women’s singles draw, while Barte will also compete in doubles with her partner
Burdette.
Men’s First Round
The Cardinal shut out UC-Santa Barbara on Saturday to earn a shot at
Pepperdine. Sophomore Richard Wire and freshman Greg Hirshman gave Stanford its
first win of the day at No. 3 doubles and junior Blake Muller and junior Matt
Bruch won a highly competitive tiebreaker to give the doubles point to the
Cardinal.
In singles, freshman Alex Clayton led the way with a 6-1, 6-4 win in the
first match. Hirshman put the Cardinal within a point of victory, winning 6-2,
6-0 at No. 6 singles. Muller then clinched a second-round spot with a 6-3, 6-1
finish at No. 4 singles. The entire lineup was playing well for Stanford, with
Bruch, Wire and senior Phil Kao each up a set when the match ended.
Men’s Second Round
Against the No. 13 Waves on Sunday, the Cardinal claimed the doubles point
with wins in the first and third matches. Muller and Bruch won 8-4 at No. 1
doubles, while Wire and Hirshman won 8-5 in the third spot.
In singles, Pepperdine won at the top two spots, both in straight sets.
Clayton lost to Andre Begemann, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 1 and Bruch fell to Bassam
Beidas, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 2. Mahmoud Kamel beat Kao at No. 5 singles to put the
Waves within a point of victory, but Muller kept the Cardinal alive with a 6-4,
6-0 win at No. 4.
Stanford needed to win both the remaining matches to advance. Wire did his
party initially, winning the first set at No. 3 singles in a tiebreak, before
Omar Altmann came back to win the second 6-3.
At the No. 6 spot, Hirshman lost the first set in a tiebreak to Rikus de
Villiers, but rebounded in the second, 6-3. Wire was tied with Altmann 1-1 in
the third set when de Villiers claimed the win with a 6-2 finish.
Stanford ends its season 13-9 overall. For Clayton,
though, there is still some tennis to be played. Ranked seventh in the nation,
he will participate in the NCAA Singles Tournament in two weeks.
