1. Nebraska Cornhuskers (33-1, NCAA Champions)
All-American Candidates:
Rachel Holloway, 5-10, S, R-Soph.; Christina Houghtelling, 6-2, OH, R-Sr.; Jordan Larson, 6-2, OH, Jr.; Sarah Pavan, 6-5, OPP,
Sr.; Tracy Stalls, 6-3, MB, Sr.
Returning Impact Players:
Kori Cooper, 6-2, MB, Soph.
Incoming Freshmen:
Kayla Banwarth, 5-10, L; Brooke Delano, 6-4, MB; Lindsey
Licht, 6-5, OPP; Tara Mueller, 6-0, OH; Jordan Wilberger, 6-1, MB
Top Players Lost:
Dani Busboom, 5-11, L; Dani Mancuso, 6-2, OH
Season Opener: vs. Tennessee on Friday, August 24 in Omaha, Neb. (AVCA
Showcase)
Take five All-American candidates, sprinkle in two AVCA Player of the Year
recipients, and what's the result? Another high-powered offensive juggernaut for
the rabid Husker Nation, and a second consecutive national championship is not
out of the question. Powered by all-world and 2006 NCAA Player of the Year Sarah Pavan, Nebraska has a variety of weapons for setter Rachel Holloway to use,
ranging from Jordan Larson on the left to Tracey Stalls out of the middle. Thanks to a large freshmen class, head coach John Cook will have substantially
more depth than in previous years; a towering Lindsey Licht and versatile Tara
Mueller are the highlights from the recruiting Class of 2007. The only question mark for
the reigning NCAA Champs is how will 2005 AVCA Player of the Year Christina
Houghtelling respond after sitting out all of last year due to a shoulder
injury? If Houghtelling comes back at full strength, the Cornhuskers could be
looking at an undefeated season.
2. Stanford Cardinal (30-4, NCAA Championship Final)
All-American Candidates:
Foluke Akinradewo, 6-3, MB, Jr.; Cynthia Barboza,
6-0, OH, Jr.; Bryn Kehoe, 5-11, S, Sr.
Other Returning Impact Players:
Franci Girard, 6-1, MB, Sr.; Erin Waller,
6-1, OPP, Jr.
Incoming Freshmen:
Gabi Ailes, 5-8, L; Stephanie Browne, 6-5, MB; Alix Klineman, 6-5, OH; Cassidy Lichtman, 6-0, S/OH
Top Players Lost:
Nji Nnamani, 5-9, DS; Kristin Richards, 6-0, OH; Lizzie
Suiter, 6-2, MB
Season Opener: at Long Beach State on Saturday, August 25 in Long Beach,
Calif.
Despite graduating some of the finest defenders to have ever played on The
Farm, the 2007 edition of the Stanford Cardinal will again be one of the
odds-on-favorites to win the NCAA Championship. The Cardinal have a great blend
of experience and youth, mixed in with a whole lot of talent. It all starts with
senior setter Bryn Kehoe, whose leadership qualities will be an invaluable asset
to head coach John Dunning. The main offensive cogs will be fellow First-Team
All-Americans and junior classmates Foluke Akinradewo and Cynthia Barboza, who started
at middle blocker and outside hitter, respectively, for the U.S. Senior National
Team that earned a bronze medal this summer at the Pan Am Games. In addition,
the Cardinal welcome the top-rated incoming freshmen class, headlined by the
extraordinary Alix Klineman. With the build and length like a middle blocker,
but the skills of an outside hitter, Klineman is destined to be the next great
one to don the Cardinal and White. Klineman's classmates will also vie for
playing time, as Gabi Ailes will redefine the term digging machine and Cassidy
Lichtman will make a big impression on the fans at Maples Pavilion thanks to her
high volleyball I.Q. If the freshmen newbies acclimate to college life rather
quickly, it could very well be Title #7 for Stanford.
3. Penn State Nittany Lions (32-3, Elite Eight)
All-American Candidates:
Nicole Fawcett, 6-4, OH, Jr.; Christa Harmotto, 6-2,
MB, Jr.; Megan Hodge, 6-3, OH, Soph.
Other Returning Impact Players:
Blair Brown, 6-4, OPP/MB, R-Fr.; Alisha
Glass, 6-0, S, Soph.; Roberta Holehouse, 5-8, L, Jr.; Kate Price, 6-3, OPP, Sr.;
Melissa Walbridge, 6-3, MB, Sr.
Incoming Freshmen:
Alyssa D'Errico, 5-9, L; Caitlyn Hess, 5-5, DS; Michelle
Osterrieder, 5-8, DS; Arielle Wilson, 6-3, MB
Top Players Lost:
Kris Brown, 5-6, DS; Ashley Fidler, 5-11, DS; Cassy Salyer,
6-5, OPP
Season Opener: vs. Texas on Friday, August 24 in University Park, Pa.
Penn State has long been the jewel of the East, stockpiling incredible talent
left and right over the years. However, success in recent NCAA Tournaments has
eluded the Nittany Lions, and this year's team is determined to reach the
school's first Final Four since 1999. Megan Hodge is back to terrorize the Big
10. The precocious sophomore not only was voted the Big 10 Freshman of the
Year in 2006, but she also captured the Big 10 Player of the Year after hammering kill after
kill on the left side. Partnering up with Hodge at the antennas is junior Nicole
Fawcett, who pummels the ball as hard as anyone in the country. Manning the
middle is super talented Christa Harmotto, whose balanced offensive and
defensive skills set her apart from her peers. With a year of experience under
her belt, the uberathletic Alisha Glass returns to run the show, though she'll
face stiff competition from fellow classmate Jessica Yanz who'll be hungry for
court time after riding the pine last season. Not known as one of the best
passing teams in NCAA competition, the Nittany Lions welcome freshman Alyssa
D'Errico with open arms, as her superb digging and passing could be the key to
shedding the choker label placed upon them after failing to reach its postseason potential
so many years.
4. Texas Longhorns (24-7, Elite Eight)
All-American Candidates:
Ashley Engle, 6-3, OPP, Soph.; Destinee Hooker, 6-4,
OH, Soph.; Brandy Magee, 6-2, MB, R-Sr.; Michelle Moriarty, 5-10, S, Sr.
Other Returning Impact Players:
Alyson Jennings, 5-9, L, Sr.; Lauren Paolini,
6-5, MB/OPP, Jr.
Incoming Freshmen:
Jen Doris, 6-5, MB; Juliann Faucette, 6-2, OH; Elizabeth
Graham, 6-3, MB; Chelsey Klein, 5-9, DS; Alex Lewis, 5-11, DS
Top Players Lost:
Dariam Acevedo, 5-10, OH; Leticia Armstrong, 6-2, MB; Jennifer Todd, 6-3, MB
Season Opener: at Penn State on Friday, August 24 in University Park, Pa.
Injury was the recurring theme throughout the 2006 season for Texas. First, head
coach Jerrit Elliott lost his All-American middle blocker Brandy Magee to a torn
ACL just minutes into the season. Then, halfway through the year another
All-American middle blocker was out of the line-up, as Leticia Armstrong had to
retire due to a chronic hip injury. Adding to the Longhorns' misery was
Dariam Acevedo's never-healing hip injury that limited her offensive abilities. In spite of all
the setbacks, Texas managed to reach the Elite Eight, riding on the arm swings
of the freshmen duo Ashley Engle and Destinee Hooker. Engle is a versatile
lefty, banging balls on the left or deftly dishing out the rock to open hitters,
while Hooker is one of the most dynamic two-sport athletes in the country and
uses her jaw-dropping athleticism at the net and behind the service line. Junior
Lauren Paolini has made huge strides in the off-season and is ready to be a
force in the middle after spending the previous two years backing up all three
front-row positions. Wearing Burnt Orange for the first time are two of the top
three players in the recruiting Class of 2007. Julianne Faucette has a reputation for
denting the hardwood from the antennas, while Jen Doris will quickly fill up her
stat line as a tremendous force out of the middle. Jerrit Elliot is known for
being a top-notch recruiter, and barring injury, this could be the year where
everything comes together.
5. Florida Gators (30-3, Sweet Sixteen)
All-American Candidates:
Elyse Cusack, 5-9, L, Soph.; Kisya Killingsworth,
6-3, MB/OH, Sr.; Amber McCray, 6-0, OPP; Angie McGinnis, 5-11, S, Sr.
Other Returning Impact Players:
Kelsey Bowers, 6-2, MB, Jr.; Alli Cecchini,
5-11, S/DS, Soph.; Marcie Hampton, 6-1, OH, Sr.; Kristina Johnson, 6-2, MB, R-Soph.
Incoming Freshmen:
Lauren Bledsoe, 6-2, OPP/MB; Erin Fleming, 5-10, DS;
Kristy Jaeckel, 6-2, OH; Callie Rivers, 6-0, OH
Top Players Lost:
Rhian Davis, 5-7, DS; Stefanie Douglas, 6-2, OH; Kari
Klinkenborg, 6-3, MB/OH
Season Opener: at Illinois State on Friday, August 24 in Normal, Ill.
After disappointingly dropping its final match of the 2006 season at home,
Florida will have another opportunity to redeem itself in front of its fans, as Gainseville
(Fla.) was selected to play host to a NCAA Regional for the second
consecutive year. Heading up the Gator attack for head coach Mary Wise will be
senior playmaker Angie McGinnis, a three-year starter who has been pegged for
National Team stardom since her high school days and will head to Colorado
Springs immediately after the college season is finished. Outside hitter Marcie
Hampton has also been a mainstay on the left her entire career, and head coach
Mary Wise will look to the 6-1 senior for stability in the back row and clutch
offense up front. Even with a torn labrum, opposite Amber McCray still earned AVCA Second-Team All-American honors last year, and now that she's playing
pain-free, more will be expected out of her. Returning to terrorize the middle
are Kisya Killingsworth, who spent all of last season hitting from the antennas,
and Kelsey Bowers, who finished seventh in blocks per game in the NCAA. Elyse
Cusack established herself as one top liberos in the country and will only get
better after spending the off-season healing from various ailments that plagued
her during her freshman campaign. With such a senior-laden squad, this is
Florida's best chance to reach the Final Four since the 2003 season.
6. UCLA Bruins (33-4, Final Four)
All-American Candidates:
Ali Daley, 6-0, OH, Jr.; Kaitlin Sather, 6-1, OH,
Jr.; Nellie Spicer, 5-10, S, Jr.
Other Returning Impact Players:
Elise Cartensen, 6-3, MB, Jr.; Rachell
Johnson, 5-11, MB, Jade Machado, 5-6, DS, Jr.; Jessica Fine, 5-6, DS, Jr.
Incoming Freshmen:
Jaz Machado, 6-0, S; Dicey McGraw, 5-10, OH; Katie Mills,
6-4, MB; Stephanie Nucci, 6-2, S; Juliane Piggott, 6-2, OH
Incoming Transfers:
Laura Holloway, 6-1, OH, Jr. (Penn State)
Top Players Lost:
Nana Meriwether, 6-1, MB; Katie Carter, 6-3, OH; Blair Socci, 5-6, DS/L; Colby Lyman, 6-0, OPP/L; Becky Mehring, 6-1, OH
Season Opener: vs. Utah on Friday, August 24 in Omaha, Neb. (AVCA Showcase)
Despite graduating one of the most dominant players in recent memory, the
Bruins will still return enough firepower to be considered one of the top
challengers for a berth to the Final Four. Middle blocker Nana Meriwether
and all of her hitting and blocking abilities will be sorely missed, but luckily
for head coach Andy Banachowski, the best collegiate setter is still wearing
Blue and Gold. Nellie Spicer showcased her abilities for the world to see after
taking UCLA to the Final Four last season, a feat that had not been accomplished
for 12 years. Thanks to her ability to convert any pass into a hittable set,
Spicer was able to use all available attackers on a consistent basis. Spreading
the offense and fooling the defense is what Spicer does best, and she has a
variety of hitters to work with in 2007. Outside hitters Ali Daley and Kaitlyn
Sather took a backseat to Meriwether last year, but expect them to become the
main offensive outlets. Laura Holloway, a high school and club teammate with
Spicer, rejoins her old partner in crime after transferring from Penn State; her overall game will only add to the depth on the outside. Without a dominant
middle blocker, expect the UCLA offense to be a three-pronged attack consisting
of Daley, Holloway and Sather hurting opponents from the left, right and back
row. Defense and good passing will be another staple of this Bruin squad, as
they showed great back-row ability during the spring and it will surely carry
over into the fall season.
7. USC Trojans (27-5, Sweet Sixteen)
All-American Candidates:
Asia Kaczor, 6-4, OPP, Sr.; Taylor Carico, 5-11, S,
Soph.
Other Returning Impact Players:
Katelyn Bishop, 6-2, MB, Sr.; Diane
Copenhagen, 6-2, OH, Sr.; Jessica Gysin, 6-1, OH, R-Jr.; Bethany Johansen, 6-4,
MB/OPP, Sr.; Kelli Tennant, 6-2, MB/OPP, Jr.
Incoming Freshmen:
Lexi Aiassa, 5-9, DS; Alexa Altamura, 5-9, DS; Shelby Avol,
5-11, OH; Zoe Garrett, 6-3, MB; Mychaela Miller, 5-10, S; Kimmee Roleder, 6-2,
OH; Geena Urango, 5-11, OH; Lauren Williams, 6-5, MB
Top Players Lost:
Debora Seilhamer, 5-5, L
Season Opener: vs. Michigan State on Friday, August 24 in Los Angeles, Calif.
(Trojan Invitational)
The departure of All-American Debora Seilhamer, the only libero to earn
All-American honors in 2006, will be difficult for USC to overcome, but the
addition of a strong and deep freshmen class could be enough to compensate for
the loss. Mick Haley recruited two of the top prep players in the country in
outside hitter Kimmee Roleder and middle blocker Zoe Garrett, both integral
members of the U.S. Junior National Team that finished fourth at the recently
completed Junior World Championships. In Roleder, the Trojans get an outside
hitter who can truly do it all: hit, pass, dig, block, and serve. Garrett
brings in much needed offense out of the middle. To welcome the precocious
freshmen will be a group of veterans who will compete for the conference crown. Led by the powerful Asia Kaczor on the right and steady Diane
Copenhagen and Jessica Gysin on the left, USC will be absolutely
loaded at the antennas. Pac-10 Freshman of the Year Taylor Carico has the
international experience to take her game to the next level and will challenge
for national post-season honors. A dangerous team on any given night, the
Trojans will give any team fits due to their physical play at
the net and their diversified offense.
8. Wisconsin Badgers (26-7, Sweet Sixteen)
All-American Candidates:
Britteny Dolgner, 6-0, OH, Soph.; Jackie Simpson,
6-0, S, Sr.; Jocelyn Wack, 5-11, L, Sr.
Other Returning Impact Players:
Katherine Dykstra, 6-3, MB, R-Soph.; Taylor Reineke, 6-3, MB, Jr.; Audra Jeffers, 6-2, OH/MB, R-Jr.
Incoming Freshmen:
Kim Kuzma, 5-7, L; Allison Wack, 6-0, OH
Top Players Lost:
Maria Carlini, 6-2, OH; Amy Bladow, 6-1, MB
Season Opener: vs. UW-Milwaukee on Friday, August 24 in Madison, Wis. (InnTowner
Invitational)
Wisconsin was just one of two teams to hand Penn State a conference loss last
year, and with five starters returning, Pete Waite's troops are looking make some
noise in the Big 10 and in the NCAA Tournament. If it weren't for the tremendous
performance of PSU's Megan Hodge, sophomore Brittney Dolgner would have claimed
the top freshman prize in the conference, as her effortless attacking style
complements her superb all-around game. Feeding Dolgner high balls to the
outside is senior Jackie Simpson, who earned AVCA Second-Team All-American
accolades after guiding the Badgers into the Sweet Sixteen. Classmate Jocelyn Wack has been a staple in the back row for Wisconsin, taking over the libero
position since her freshman year, and looks to pass the torch to another dynamic
defender in freshman Kim Kuzma. Taylor Reinke is back to protect the net, as she
led the Big 10 in blocks per game last year, while the athletic Katherine Dykstra
will look to have a breakout year on the right side. Like the Gators, the
Badgers were awarded a regional and such a talented and solid cast of players,
they could give their hometown fans something to cheer about come December.
9. Washington Huskies (29-5, Final Four)
All-American Candidates:
Alesha Deesing, 6-1, MB, Sr.; Tamari Miyashiro, 5-4,
L, R-Soph.; Christal Morrison, 6-2, OH, Sr.; Jessica Swarbrick, 6-1, MB, Jr.
Other Returning Impact Players:
Ashley Aratani, 5-5, DS, Sr.; Jill Collymore,
5-10, OH, Jr.; Stevie Mussie, 5-9, OH, Sr.; Becky Perry, 6-2, OH, R-Fr.
Incoming Freshmen:
Kindra Carlson, 6-1, OH/MB; Kelly Christian, 5-11, S;
Jenna Hagglund, 5-9, S; Bizzy Williams, 5-10, DS
Incoming Transfers:
Airial Salvo, 6-0, OH, Jr. (Utah – Eligible in 2008)
Top Players Lost:
Janine Sandell, 5-10, OPP; Courtney Thompson, 5-8, S
Season Opener: vs. San Francisco on Friday, August 24 in Seattle, Wash.
(Husky Classic)
No matter how you spin it, no matter what anyone says, the loss of Courtney
Thompson is huge. A three-time AVCA First-Team All-American and the heart and
soul of the Huskies during her tenure, Thompson was known for her scrappy play
and never-say-die attitude, and her spirit lives on in Seattle. The lucky player
who has the huge task of filling Thompson's shoes is freshman Jenna Hagglund, a
physical and competitive playmaker who will have plenty of ammunition to work
with this year. Outside hitter Christal Morrison is a big-time player who picked
up Pac-10 Player of the Year and AVCA First-Team All-American honors in 2006 and will
attempt to guide the Huskies to their fourth consecutive Final Four appearance. Opposing teams will be forced to pay attention to Morrison's vicious attacks
from the left, opening up the net for her teammates, including a pair of
All-American middle blockers in Alesha Deesing and Jessica Swarbrick.
Competition for the second outside hitter position will be hotly contested, as
four players will vie for playing time: Stevie Mussie, Jill Collymore, Becky
Perry and Kindra Carlson, though the latter two could also have a face-off for
time on the right. Head coach Jim McLaughlin also returns the talented Tamari Miyashiro, and she and Arizona State's Sydney Donahue will duke it for the title
of the Pac-10's best libero. If Hagglund gets up to speed and comfortable with
running the Huskies offense, Washington could easily play the spoiler to another
team's Final Four plans.
10. Cal Poly Mustangs (22-10, Second Round)
All-American Candidates:
Kylie Atherstone, 6-1, OPP, Jr.; Ali Waller, 6-1,
OH, Jr.
Other Returning Impact Players:
Chelsea Hayes, 5-11, S, Sr.; Kristin Jackson,
5-4, L, Sr.
Incoming Freshmen:
Alison Mort, 5-9, DS; Hadiyah Olowafe, 6-0, MB; Nicole
Pedersen, 6-0, MB
Incoming Transfers:
Gabrielle Rivera, 6-3, MB, R-Soph. (Florida State)
Top Players Lost:
Candace Milton, 5-11, OH
Season Opener: vs. Kansas State on Friday, August 24 in Wichita, Kan.
(Wichita State Invitational)
Many have called Jon Stevenson a miracle worker; others have called him a
magician. What he brings to the table doesn't involve any smokescreens or hocus
pocus – he's proven that he knows how to flat-out coach and motivate his team to
reach beyond its potential. In 2002, he came aboard a St. Mary's (Calif.)
program that had an RPI of #247; two years later, it skyrocketed to #9,
thanks in part to two regular-season victories over Stanford, the 2004 NCAA
Champions. He bolted to Cal Poly the following season and has taken the Mustangs
from a RPI ranking of 223 into the AVCA Top 25 in just two short years. Coincidence? Kylie Atherstone would beg to differ. The 6-1 opposite originally
committed to St. Mary's, but reneged her National Letter-of-Intent to follow
Stevenson to Cal Poly. Her decision has paid off in a big way. She has become
one of the top players in the country and is the go-to player for the 2006 Big
West Champions. Ali Waller is a big outside hitter who transferred from San Diego State a year ago, and she is expected to have a breakout season and
challenge for possible post-season accolades. Senior Chelsea Hayes returns to
run the team, while classmate Kristin Jackson is a stabilizing force in the back
as the team's starting libero. While many of the athletes are not household
names just yet, the Mustangs are a dangerous team to be reckoned with throughout
the season.
The Best of the Rest
