College football prospect Andrew Luck has given a verbal commitment to
Stanford University. Luck, an incoming senior quarterback at Stratford
High School of the Spring Branch Independent School District in Houston, led the
Stratford Spartans to a 10-2 record in 2007 and a District 19-5A championship.
He is both excited at the prospect of attending one of the nation's great
academic institutions and relieved that the recruiting process will be winding
down.
“First of all, I would like to thank my high school coaches and teammates for
getting me this far. I would also like to thank the football programs that
showed an interest in me. I had the chance to talk to great coaches at
several universities and the decision was difficult. Stanford is
considered one of the best academic institutions in the country and also has a
great football tradition. I believe that Coach Harbaugh and his staff will
get the Cardinal football program headed in the right direction, and I am glad
that I will have an opportunity to contribute.”
Eliot Allen, head coach and athletic director at Stratford High School,
thought it was a great decision.
“I am excited that Andrew has committed
to play football at Stanford. Like Andrew, I am very confident that Jim Harbaugh (in his first year as Stanford head coach) will turn things around in
Palo Alto, and Andrew has an opportunity to be a part of that. Jim had a
tremendous career as a college and professional quarterback, and he will be a
great teacher for Andrew. Coach Harbaugh's enthusiasm is infectious.”
Andrew Luck is not the only Stratford Spartan to have given a commitment to a
D-I program. Senior defensive lineman Jimmy Burge recently committed to the
University of Missouri. Eliot Allen had this to say about his two D-I
college recruits:
“We have big expectations for Andrew and Jimmy and for the entire team
this fall. We feel that we have a good group of players that will be competitive
as we defend the District 19-5A title.”
Andrew will be available for questions or interviews Saturday, June 30 at 4
p.m. at Stratford High School's main entrance on 14555 Fern, Houston 77079.
