Now that is a rockin' headline!
The 2007 Scout.com Convention was held June 11-14, 2007 at the New York New
York Hotel in Las Vegas. A great time was had by all, and we don't just mean at
the casinos, clubs, and University of Oregon cheerleader training centers.
What happens in Vegas usually stays in Vegas, but we are going to make a rare
exception. We are very proud to announce that The Bootleg won not one, but two
major awards for outstanding achievement in publishing.
1. TheBootleg.com won for “Best Site Content”
We seldom get the opportunity to blow our own horns (which has been tough
ever since horns and most other noise makers were banned at Pac-10 conference
stadiums in the 1980s). However, receiving this coveted award is a real coup,
beating out more than 157 other college websites in the Scout.com network! It is
a tribute to the entire Bootleg organization, but primarily to the work of TheBootleg.com's powerhouse Publisher extraordinaire Michael Eubanks. Please join
Lars, Carridine, and yours truly in a tip of the hat to our remarkable “Chief
Bootie”, whose indefatigable effort and superlative work have been so rightfully
recognized on a national stage. Simply put, our “ME97” is the best web publisher
in the entire country, and we hope this award heightens our fans' awareness of
the quality of his outstanding work. His recruiting coverage is incomparable,
his stories insightful, his overall production irreplaceable. Well done, Mike!
2. The Bootleg Magazine won for “Best Olympic Sports Coverage”
So basically, The Bootleg Magazine essentially won the publishing equivalent
of the Sears Cup. Damn! Sure, at Stanford we have an inherent advantage in that
our fan base is well-accustomed to following a wide variety of non-revenue
sports, but it still takes a lot of time and effort. We want to recognize
Mike and our many excellent contributing writers for helping make our Sears
sports coverage the best in the nation. We will be announcing our award in
Section 214: Row W during the second television time out at the UCLA football home
opener. Makes your plans now!
The photo shows Mike with Scout's General Manager, Patrick Crumb, as “ME97” is
presented with the award for “Best Site Content”. Mr. Crumb has been with Scout
since the company's launch in 2001 and was the company's President & General
Counsel, a member of its board of directors and an inside investor who clearly
got a generous return on his investment. Crumb oversaw Scout's corporate and
business development, corporate finance, mergers & acquisitions, legal affairs
and major strategic partnerships, including FoxSports, Yahoo, CBS Sportsline and
Sports Illustrated. Following the acquisition of Scout by Fox Interactive Media
in late 2005, Crumb was named General Manager and now oversees all aspects of
Scout's business on behalf of Fox.
Scout Media, Inc., the parent company of Scout.com, the country's No. 1
independent online sports network, is owned by Fox Interactive Media [FIM], a
subsidiary of FoxSports. Scout Publishing is the producer of 45 of the most
widely read local sports magazines in the United States.
The 35 college-specific magazines in the Scout Publishing network include
Alabama, BYU, Cal, Clemson, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Kentucky, Louisville, Miami, Michigan, Mississippi,
Nebraska, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Notre Dame, Ohio State,
Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Penn State, Stanford, Syracuse, Texas,
Tennessee, USC, Washington, and Wisconsin.
Hmmm. Have you noticed that most of these are major traditional powers,
public universities with student enrollment typically in excess of 20,000 and
alumni based in the multi-100,000s? Along with BYU, Notre Dame and USC, Stanford is
one of only four private universities in the group. Notre Dame and USC have
among the strongest football traditions and have an astounding 18 “Poll Era”
(since 1936) national championships between them. BYU has an entire religion
that includes support of BYU sports right along with tithing and missions. BYU
has nearly 30,000 full and part-time students, and 98.5% of their alumni base
resides in the United States. The Morman religion, aka The Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-Day Saints has more than 12 million members, with more than six
million of those residing in the United States. That is a lot of potential
subscribers, although some of the female readers are known to share the same
copy in their households!
So Stanford is small, private, non-denominational and lacks a consistent
winning tradition. Why then, in the face of such overwhelming disadvantages, do
we keep plugging away running a best-of-class website and publishing a national
award-winning magazine?
Because as you know… “We bow to no program at Stanford University!”
Freakin' A! Bring it on!
