Strange weather in the Capitol City, 70's and breezy, although it calmed
later in the evening. Stanford had a great day, advancing those who
should, and we watched Josh Hustedt end the day in the race for points in the
Decathlon.
Hustedt ended Day One in sixth place, highlighted by 24-1 3/4 in the long jump
and 6-7 1/2 in the high jump. He finished with 3,869 points, in a fine
position to place. He even had not one but two fair shot puts. The
key today will be excelling in the high hurdles and pole vault, his two strong
second-day events, and finishing with a decent 1500m.
In the Women's 100m, Jakki Bailey didn't advance out of the heats, but Janice
Davis ran a fine 11.50 to reach to the semifinals. Sadly, Davis finished
back in the pack with an 11.65 and will not repeat her 2006 final showing.
Michael Garcia ran a near 800m PR, 1:49.62, but could not advance.
Ashley Freeman did move on in the Women's 800m with 2:07.23.
Michael Robertson had the second best throw, 199-2, to advance in the discus,
but Daniel Schaerer missed by about three feet.
Erica McLain had a season best 20-7 to advance in the long jump, but it'll be
hard to place high in this loaded event.
Lindsay Allen was really the star today, setting new school and Pac-10 records in the
3000m steeplechase, 10:01.53, to advance. The Pleasant Hill (Calif.)
junior broke the old record by six seconds.
Teresa McWalters ran a very controlled 16:05.92 to easily advance in the
5000m. She
finished high here, a rising star.
Jacob Gomez and Hari Mix ran very easily and well to advance in the 5000m, Mix running a PR
16:00.01.
It'll be a bit warmer today, but with a slight wind. And lots of action.
