Despite a strong start to his senior season, San Diego (Calif.) Francis
Parker School running back/cornerback Gino Gordon (5-11, 185) still sits on the two
offers he received in the spring and summer.
“Still just Oregon and Stanford,” Gordon reports. “I'm getting a lot of calls
-
Stanford and Oregon obviously - but also Boise State, UC Davis, Villanova,
Harvard, Brown, UNLV and Yale. I'm not worried, though. I'm just trying to finish
out the season and focus on that. If they come, they come. Really, I have two
good offers right now, two great schools to choose from.”
Gordon says that the Cardinal and the Ducks stand out as his top two
schools at this point.
“Oregon has excellent football. Stanford has an excellent education and is a
program on the rebuild,” Gordon opines. “They're both situations where I wouldn't
be in a bad place.”
So who is recruiting Gordon the hardest between the two?
“I'd say that Stanford is. They said that they really like me and want me for
an official visit,” the recruit replies. “Tyler [Mabry - Gordon's teammate and a Stanford
commit] keeps leaving Stanford out there for me, recruiting me.”
But Gordon says that he isn't in a hurry to make his decision.
“I'm planning to wait till after the season,” Gordon shares. “We're having a
good year and I just want to make sure that is what I'm focusing on. I'm going
to take my visits to Stanford and Oregon and maybe some other places.”
To date, the San Diego standout has only visited Stanford and Oregon, tripping to both
unofficially this summer.
As for the Stanford admissions application, Gordon reports that he continues
to work on it.
“I've filled out part of it and am staying within the timeframe I have for each step,” Gordon
explains. “They've done a good job of keeping me updated on
that timeframe.”
Attending one of the top schools in San Diego, Gordon has accumulated a 3.86
GPA (weighted) and scored a 1790 on the SAT, which he plans to take again.
Playing both ways for Parker, who is 4-0 and ranked No. 1 in CIF-San Diego
Section Div. V, Gordon is averaging 165.3 yards a game and has scored 11
touchdowns - eight on the ground and three through the air. Defensively he
has
intercepted three passes and taken one back for a score.
“I'm trying to do it offensively, defensively - anyway possible,” Gordon
comments. “Teams are choosing to kick the ball away from me. I like getting the ball, I
like hitting. More schools are looking at me as an athlete. Basically, I'm open
to play wherever. Before I got into high school, I only played one year of
running back; I was always a defensive guy. I just want to produce.”
This weekend, Parker will play Central Union, a San Diego Section Div. III
school.
“We're trying to prove we're not just a small school, but also really good athletes
who want to push ourselves. We tried to get a hard schedule and play some tough
teams,” Gordon states.
Last fall, Gordon was a key reason why Parker won the CIF Division V title in
the San Diego Section. He had 973 yards rushing on 139 carries and scored 12
touchdowns while adding 11 receptions for 251 yards and three touchdowns. Defensively, he added 50 tackles, five interceptions and a sack from his
secondary position.
