One of Stanford's prominent official visitors this weekend is somebody who
was originally reported with a schedule to visit The Farm last weekend, but
visit plans have shaken out otherwise for League City (Tex.) Clear Creek High
School senior Austin Yancy.
"Actually, Stanford told me that I could come out the 13th or the 20th, and
we picked the 20th," the Texas receiver explains. Last weekend he took an
in-state official visit to SMU, which proved fruitful.
"SMU is looking for wide receivers, so that might be a good opportunity for
me," Yancy says. "I had a lot of fun up there. It was a great visit.
The Sunday I was up there, they offered."
The 6'3.5" athlete has previously held one Division I scholarship from UTEP,
where Mike Price and his staff had a chance to work out Yancy at their camp this
past summer. Though the Miners have been very high on Yancy, the official
visit they scheduled for him late in the fall fell through as Clear Creek made a
push into the playoffs that conflicted with the date. Yancy did not
reschedule the trip, though keeping open the possibility to visit El Paso at the
end of this month.
Harvard has also been high on the mind of Yancy, who is an exemplary
student-athlete. His 4.47 GPA ranks him 11th in his class of 755, while he
scored a 1930 on the new SAT (1280 math + verbal). The move by the
Mustangs, however, likely means that SMU would be his top option if he stays in
the Lone Star State, and ahead of Harvard as well.
"I like SMU not only because of the scholarship offer," Yancy states.
"I also felt really comfortable there. I had a fun time. They're
close to home in Dallas, and they're a really good school, too. For
Harvard, the lack of a scholarship kind of hurts."
"But I want to see how this visit goes," he says of Stanford.
Houston area recruiting coach Tom Hayes is also the defensive coordinator and
defensive backs coach for the Cardinal, and he has taken the lead in Yancy's
recruitment. Appropriately, talk has turned in recent weeks where Hayes
and Stanford are discussing Yancy as a defensive recruit in addition to his
projection at wide receiver.
"They've mentioned safety because of my physical playing style. They
like my athleticism," the recruit relays. "I also played there earlier
during my high school career."
It was all offense in 2005 for Yancy, racking up 35 catches for more than 400
yards and three scores. He added another two touchdowns on the ground.
Clear Creek finished the year with a losing record but made it to the playoffs
and won their postseason opener before dropping in the second round. Yancy
earned First Team All-District honors.
This weekend is his second trip to Stanford, following his summer stay on The
Farm for the Cardinal's camp. "At the end of the camp last year, they told
me that I was one of the few people on the board," Yancy reports.
"I turned in my application right around the holidays, but I still really
haven't heard either way," he adds. "When Coach Hayes was in here
[Wednesday], he talked about the visit and the arrangements - not really much
about my application or a scholarship. I guess that will come this
weekend."
We guess that news will come when we next talk to Yancy after he returns to
Texas. Look for that report here next week.
