While the rest of the nation moved full-steam ahead on their respective recruiting classes during the spring, summer and fall, much for Stanford waits until December and January due to the admissions application process unique to the Cardinal. Often times we share the stories of good news, but there are also tales of disappointment. Two of the latter were shared with The Bootleg this week.

Stanford's proud Peach State pipeline has brought numerous talented student-athletes to The Farm, but the options to continue that tradition in the 2006 decreased by one lately when Atlanta (Ga.) North Springs High School senior defensive end Victor Ugenyi received some disappointing news.

"I didn't get admitted to Stanford," the recruit reports.  "That's what I was really aiming for.  We were already making plans for being out there.  Now I need to go in a different direction."

Ugenyi had made no secret that he dreamed of dressing out in cardinal and white, while spending four to five years on the California campus.  He says he received the news just before the holidays, allowing him to redirect his focus toward other options before Signing Day.

"Right now it's between Baylor and Army," Ugenyi offers.  "I'm going to Baylor this week, and hopefully I can make a decision after that."

"It will come down to if I like the campus," he continues.  "And at West Point, the team meshed well together.  There were no groups that split the team up.  They had a lot of chemistry, and that's important because these are the guys I'll spend the next four years with.  I want to fit in there."

Ugenyi already visited Army in December.  He holds written offers from the Black Knights and the Bears, and he was additionally offered by Indiana and Furman.

The Cardinal took another hit on defense recently for Stanford when Oklahoma City (Okla.) Putnam City High School athlete Bryan McCann dropped off the board.  The 5'11" burner had an injury-shortened season that saw him break his leg in his fourth game of the year, after scoring a total of six touchdowns on offense, defense and special teams in the first three.  It was hoped that the Oklahoma athlete would help fill the shoes, in more ways than one, of graduating senior cornerback and kickoff returner T.J. Rushing, but ultimately McCann can't for the Cardinal.

The cornerback recruit started the New Year with the news that his admissions application to Stanford was not accepted, but on the heels of a pair of official visits in December, McCann and his family was prepared and at peace to make a commitment.  He gave his verbal pledge on January 2 to SMU.

"I took my visit to SMU, and I really liked the players and coaches.  The whole environment was great, and the educational program was a great fit for me," McCann comments.  "I really liked it but waited to take my visit the next week to Tulsa.  There was no comparison at all, and I was able to commit the next week."

One of the significant factors that weight in favor of the Mustangs was their academic offerings.

"I want to major in business," McCann explains.  "Tulsa's program isn't as good as SMU's program.  SMU's is one of the top five in the world."
