Stanford
was officially presented today with the 2005 Lexus Gauntlet trophy, representing
a year-long all-sports victory over Cal. This is the inaugural year of
this competition between the Bay Area rival schools, and the Cardinal defeated
the Bears by a score of 70-65.
"We're pleased to bring the Lexus Gauntlet trophy home to Stanford," says
athletic director Ted Leland. "This has been an amazing year for our
athletic department. This trophy is a tribute to the triumph and
sportsmanship of our outstanding student-athletes and exceptional coaching
staffs in this passionate rivalry."
Leland deferred credit to his coaches and programs for the Gauntlet victory.
On hand were three of Stanford's head coaches as the trophy was presented: Bret
Simon (men's soccer), John Rittman (softball) and John Tanner (women's water
polo).

More than a trophy, the Gauntlet competition presents the winner with
scholarship money for their general athletic fund. Additionally, one
individual from the winning school is chosen for a post-graduate scholarship.
Fifth-year women's basketball standout guard and fan favorite Susan Borchardt
was today named that recipient. Borchardt is currently playing in the WNBA
with the Minnesota Lynx and could not be on hand.
Results for the 2004-05 academic year and first edition of the Gauntlet are
below. Five points are awarded for every sport, save football, which is
the core rivalry between the two schools and earns 10 points. In the event
of a tie, the points are split evenly between the two schools. For those
sports where Stanford and Cal do not meet in an explicit head-to-head match-up,
scoring is derived from Pac-10 or NCAA competition. For those sports where
the schools meet multiple times during the year, such as swimming or track &
field, the dual meet competition is used for scoring.
