The Stanford Cardinal scored seven runs in the top of the first inning and
then cruised to a 9-3 victory over the Florida State Seminoles in game one of a
critical three-game series. Freshman Donny Lucy, making his first start of the
season, contributed two hits and three RBI to lead the 13-hit offensive attack
while Jeremy Guthrie threw six quality innings to notch his second win of the
year.
The seven-run outburst in the top of the first inning began with consecutive
singles to leadoff the game by Chris O'Riordan and Sam Fuld. Ryan Garko was then
hit by the pitch to load the bases which set the table for the middle of the
lineup. Jason Cooper though was unable to come through as the junior DH struck
out. But the following hitter, Carlos Quentin, delivered a single to left
scoring O'Riordan and Fuld. Brian Hall then stepped up to the plate and singled
down the left field line and after FSU's left fielder bobbled the ball, Garko
scored Stanford's third run of the game while Quentin and Hall moved up to
second and third. Freshman Donny Lucy then came through with his first hit in a
Cardinal uniform when he singled home two more runs increasing the lead to 5-0.
But the Cardinal weren't done, as after a Scott Dragicevich single, Andy Topham
doubled home Lucy and Dragicevich capping the seven-run inning.
Jeremy Guthrie easily got through the first inning, but then ran into some
trouble in the second. Four consecutive singles to start the inning and all of a
sudden the score was 7-2 and the Seminoles had runners at first and second with
none out. But Guthrie settled down and struck out #9 hitter Scott Toole and then
induced leadoff hitter Kevin Richmond to hit into a 5-4-3 double play to end the
inning. The Cardinal got back on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth on an
RBI single by Lucy and an RBI single from Topham. But that would be it for the
Stanford hitters as the Seminoles bullpen shutdown the Cardinal over the final
five frames.
Florida State meanwhile was having trouble with Guthrie. The junior
righthander put up zeros in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings giving
up only three singles in the process. Guthrie though appeared to have tired in
the seventh as he walked the first two hitters in the inning and was pulled in
favor of Ryan McCally. McCally was able to get out of the jam with allowing only
one run and FSU saw its last chance to get back into the game slip away.
Offensive stars for the Cardinal this afternoon were Donny Lucy (2-for-4, 3
RBI), Andy Topham (2-for-4, 3 RBI), and Carlos Quentin (2-for-5, 2 RBI). Guthrie
improved to 2-0 on the season tossing six innings yielding seven hits, three
runs (two earned), he walked two and struck out eight. McCally threw the final
three innings without giving up a run to record his second save of the season.
