Things are precarious right now in the Pac-10. Earlier
today, UCLA (one week after its defeat over formely number one
Kansas) was leading by 22 over Arizona. However, Arizona
then went on a 25-2 run and eventually went on to win the game.
While the two Washington schools are most likely the two
weakest teams in the Pac-10, it is still quite pleasing to get a
sweep over ANYONE right now. After cruising past WSU on
Thursday 83-50, Stanford decimated Washington 105-60. Just
like against the hapless Cougars, there's not too much to be
learned about this Cardinal team because of the poor quality of
this Washington squad (7-11, 1-7). Just mark this game on
the left of your win-loss column.
The last time U-Dub had defeated Stanford was in 1997 at the
old Hec Edmundson facility. While the Husky football team
has had it's way against the Cardinal, it has been the complete
opposite for the basketball squad. Stanford has now beat
Washington nine games in a row and coach Bob Bender remains a
dismal 0-9 at Maples in his career.
Stanford did not get off to as good of a start as they did on
Thursday. Washington actually had a brief lead at 10-8
early in the game, but it went away as soon as it came when
Julius Barnes responded with a three pointer. Buoyed by
Curtis Borchardt's 13 points in the opening 8:15, Stanford was
able to pull out to a 17 point lead in the closing seconds of the
half. With time running out, Tony Giovacchini hit a
buzzer-beating 28 foot shot as time expired (which would be his
only points of the game) to stretch the advantage to 20 at 49-29.
The Cardinal did not miss a beat at the start of the second
half, opening with a 27-7 run. Coach Mike Montgomery soon
took out his starters and let the other players gain some
valuable playing time. Among them were Joe Kirchofer (11
minutes), Matt Lottich (10 minutes), Nick Robinson (6 minutes),
and Tyler Besecker (4 minutes). Stanford eventually went on
to win 105-60.
