SEATTLE - Throughout this season, it seems every poll, including this
one, has searched for reasons to doubt the Miami Hurricanes' worthiness
as a No. 1 team. Now there is no doubt. TheInsiders.com network has
unanimously awarded its top ranking to a team - the Hurricanes - for the
first time. Consecutive 59-0 and 65-7 victories over ranked teams
apparently makes a pretty convincing argument.
So now the Hurricanes, 10-0 after its victory over Washington, with a
game remaining against Virginia Tech, have nailed down a spot in the
Rose Bowl, as well as the inside track on their fifth national
championship.
Miami's nearest pursuers, No. 2 Florida (9-1) and No. 3 Texas (10-1),
have difficult roads to Pasadena. The Gators must play No. 5 Tennessee,
then another highly ranked opponent in the SEC championship game. The
Longhorns have a Big 12 title matchup against No. 9 Colorado, upset
winners over Nebraska.
Oregon, No. 4 and 9-1 with a game left against Oregon State in the
so-called "Civil War," has an outside shot at a Rose Bowl berth. But the
Ducks need Florida and Texas to falter, and Tennessee not to win over
too many voters if it knocks off the Gators.
Back into TheInsiders.com Top 25 College Football Poll are Ohio State,
7-4 and fresh off its upset of then No. 9 Michigan (now No. 16); LSU,
7-3, and Auburn, 7-4. Out are Georgia Tech, Boston College and Arkansas.
