Some Observations ...
- The freshman hitters continue to impress. Billy
Paganetti, fresh off his four-hit performance in the
alumni game, stroked two more hits today and hit another
ball very hard. This guy can hit to all fields and
even pitched fairly well today. Chris Carter went
hitless today, but did hit two deep fly balls to center
field. Carter looks to have a lot of power and will
hit his fair share of homers in a Cardinal uniform in the
next few years. Danny Putnam had another solid
game. If you recall, Putnam roped a triple off the
wall in center off current major leaguer Jeff Austin on
Sunday, and just missed a homer again today as he laced
one off the wall in left for a double. He also has
shown good speed on the base paths and in the field.
- Scott Dragicevich did not play in the field at all, but
hit in the batting order. He smoked a double down
the left-field line in his second at-bat, but limped
around the bases. Swing looks pretty good, but
still not nearly at 100%.
- Top hits of the afternoon : Putnam's double off the wall
in left, Hall's triple to deep right-center, and
O'Riordan's double to the right-center gap.
- Team B needed a three-run rally in the bottom of the
sixth inning to win the game and it certainly contained
some dramatics. With one out, O'Riordan laced a
double to right to bring the tying run to the
plate. Garko then came up a lofted a deep fly ball
to left that was caught at the warning track (based on
Garko's reaction after he hit it, he thought he had hit
it out, after the catch was made in left he got some
grief from his fellow teammates for watching his fly
ball). Quentin was the next hitter and was plunked
to bring the winning run to the plate. Back-to-back
singles by Topham and Paganetti tied the game at 3-3 and
brought Swope to the plate with an opportunity to win the
game. Swope though would not get a chance to hit as
pitcher Jonny Dyer balked home the winning run.
