Seven different players scored in the 51-28 rout over the
Solar Satans. At many times the game felt more like a
basketball game, with both teams putting up impressive numbers.
Stanford had 548 yards of total offense while ASU had 504.
ASU nearly jumped ahead early when Mike Karney caught Jeff
Krohn's pass in stride in the redzone. Right before he was
able to break the plane, he was stripped by Jason White.
The ball went through the endzone for a touchback.
Stanford got the scoring going when Randy Fasani found Ryan Wells
from six yards out with 4:14 remaining the first half. ASU
responded right away with a TD 0:53 later, after Krohn connected
with Jason Taplin for the forty yard score. But it would be
Stanford that would close the half strongly with two touchdowns,
the first being a 19 yard run by Jared Newberry, the second a 3
yard run by Kerry "Cutter" Carter to give Stanford a
20-7 lead.
In the second quarter, Mike Biselli and Mike Barth had one and
two FGs, respectively. Then, late in the second half with
Eric Johnson punting out of his own endzone, ASU was flagged for
a personal foul - roughing the punter. The Cardinal
capitalized on that mistake as Fasani later found Nick
"Danger" Sebes for a 32 yard touchdown with 0:28
remaining in the half. In was Sebes' second touchdown
reception in his first two collegiate contests.
ASU tried to mount a comeback in the second half when they scored
in less than three minutes. However, Stanford scored 14
unanswered points, both beautiful touchdown receptions from Brett
Pierce and Teyo Johnson. Just like Sebes, Johnson also has two touchdown
receptions in his first two games.
Krohn found Shaun McDonald for a 68 yard touchdown. After
scoring on the two-point conversion, the score was 44-28.
However, the only question from that point on was if
Stanford was going to score over 50 points.
In the end, Stanford did end up breaking the half-century mark
when Brian Allen scored on a 47 yard touchdown run to close out
the scoring. Allen ended up having 134 yards on just 13
carries. Fasani was 17-26 for 295 yards and 4 touchdowns.
In two games, he has 8 touchdowns and no interceptions.
"Cool Hand" Luke Powell lead all receivers with 6
catches and 143 yards. The defense was never able to get
any sacks, but was still able to put a reasonable amount of
pressure on the ASU quarterback.
