Oregon may be without its most complete player when they open conference play versus in-state rival Oregon State Sunday.

EUGENE, Ore.,- Forward Arsalan Kazemi left the first half of Monday’s win over Nevada after receiving an elbow to the head from teammate Carlos Emory as the pair chased down a loose ball. Kazemi never returned and following the game it was reported that he was held out due to concussion-like symptoms. Thursday an Oregon official confirmed that Kazemi had indeed suffered a concussion.

In order to be cleared for contact, which includes practices and games, a player must show no signs of a concussion for at least 24 hours prior. So far this week, that has not been the case, as Kazemi has not taken part in practice.

Head coach Dana Altman said no “definitive word” was available Thursday, and decision for his game participation would be made Friday or Saturday.

Kazemi, who is the team’s leader in rebounds and steals, has played a major factor in the team’s 11-2 start. Without Kazemi, the Ducks would turn either to freshman forward Ben Carter or play small inserting another guard into the lineup.

“It’s going to impact us a lot,” senior E.J. Singler said. “Arsalan brings a lot to our team, both offensively and defensively and on the boards. He does a lot for us and we’re just going to need people to step up if he can’t go.”

Carter has averaged 4.6 points per game and 4.1 rebounds per game in limited action, but has exhibited solid offensive skills and surprising athleticism, especially when pursuing rebounds.

“He’s been practicing well. He’s been getting a lot better. He’s going to have to step up for us and I think he will,” Singler said.
