It will be
Oregon State
's first bowl trip to San Antonio and the third ever matchup between the two teams (1980, 1987.) Oregon State has lost both previous meetings.
Texas (8-4) is ranked No. 23 in the BCS. They are No. 25 in the USA Today Coaches poll, unranked in the AP and No. 20 in the Harris poll.
The Longhorns were at one time ranked as high as No. 10 in the Coaches' poll this season before suffering their first loss to then No. 8 West Virginia. Texas has one win over a ranked opponent this year, at then No. 18 Texas Tech. They lost to then No. 13 Oklahoma and this past Saturday to No. 6 Kansas State. Notable Texas wins this season include Oklahoma State and Baylor.
Texas replaced QB
David Ash
with
Case McCoy
late in the season. McCoy has twice replaced Ash in games and got the start against K-State. Ash was listed as questionable for the Kansas State game due to a rib injury but media reports prior to the game indicated the change was more due to a coach's decision than anything else. In its past 24 games, Texas has changed starters six times.
The Alamo Bowl's tie-in with the Pac-12 came following the 2010 season (then the Pac-10.) Prior to the '10 season, the second pick from the Pac-12 was previously made by the Holiday Bowl.
NOTE:
The Longhorns appeared headed to the Cotton Bowl but when NIU jumped into the BCS top 16, they received an automatic BCS bowl bid, bumping Oklahoma out of the mix as a BCS at-large team and putting the Sooners into the Cotton Bowl.
