Balanced effort leads to first road win

Arizona used a balanced effort to get its first road win of the season. Read on for a recap of Arizona's 34-24 win over Utah.

Arizona needed one more win to guarantee a bowl game. In order to do that, it would mean that the Wildcats would have their first road win since last season at Arizona State.

Arizona did just that.

The Wildcats had impressive performances on both sides of the ball to defeat Utah 34-24 in Salt Lake City on Saturday night.

Arizona started on its own 20-yard line with a fumbled snap and incomplete pass to force third down. On that third down, Matt Scott found David Richards for 14 yards and a first down. Ka'Deem Carey then gained nine on the ground and followed it with 12 yards. Scott gained ten on the ground and Carey was able to add 25 of his own. Unfortunately, an offensive pass interference call stalled the drive and Arizona turned it over on downs.

Utah started on its own 31-yard line with a nine-yard pass from Travis Wilson to Jake Murphy. John White then gained 16 yards on his first carry of the game and after a short pass, White was able to pick up four yards. On third and three, White picked up six yards for the first down. White got the ball again and gained a yard before Dres Anderson picked up five yards on a sweep. On third and five, Arizona was able to force an incomplete pass and fourth down. On fourth down, the Utes threw another incomplete pass and Arizona took over on its own 26-yard line.

Unfortunately for the Wildcats, Carey fumbled on the first place of the drive and the Utes took over on Arizona's 28-yard line. On Utah's first play, Wilson found White for an eight-yard pass and then he picked up seven on the ground. White gained eight yards to Arizona's five-yard line and Arizona was able to force fourth and one, as the defense stood Utah up and the Utes turned it over on downs.

Starting on his own five-yard line, Carey gained 28 yards on the ground. Scott followed it up with an 18-yard pass to Austin Hill and three plays later, Arizona's drive was kept alive with a targeting call. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, there wasn't much more going on and John Bonano settled for a 43-yard field goal that put the Wildcats up 3-0 with 2:15 left in the first quarter.

Utah started on its own 13-yard line with a nine-yard and five-yard run by White. Two plays later, Utah gained 42 yards on a flea flicker to Devonte Christopher that basically ended the first quarter. Wilson completed a four-yard pass to Anderson and on third down, White was able to pick up 13 yards for the first to Arizona's 12.

Murphy then gained four in the air before White was held to zero yards on the next carry. On third and six, Wilson hit Karl Williams for five yards and the Utes chose to go for the field goal, which was faked. The fake turned into a touchdown with a three-yard run by punter Coleman Petersen as the extra point made it 7-3.

Taking over on its own 25, Scott ran for 13 yards and Carey followed it with nine before Scott gained nine of his own on the ground. Daniel Jenkins was able to pick up 17 on the ground followed by 19 more for Scott. After a four-yard run by Jenkins, Carey gained three yards and followed it up with a one-yard touchdown with the extra point making it 10-7 with a little over nine minutes left.

On Utah's ensuing drive, Wilson fumbled and Reggie Gilbert recovered at the Utah 27. Arizona could not get much going on its drive until third down, when Scott found Richards for 14 yards. Two plays later, Scott ran it in from ten yards out for the score and the extra point gave the Wildcats the 17-7 lead.

Utah took over on its own 30-yard line and was able to pick up a first down with a 13-yard pass to Anderson on third down. Two plays later, White gained seven on the ground and followed it with eight yards. After an incomplete pass, Wilson hit Scott for seven yards and on third and three Wilson connected with an open Murphy for 34 yards, as the extra point made it 17-14 in favor of the Wildcats with 3:45 left in the half.

Arizona started on its own 13-yard line with an 18-yard run by Carey. Two plays later, Scott hit Hill for 17 yards and found him for 11 yards three plays later. After an incomplete pass, Garic Wharton caught a 14-yard pass and Daniel Jenkins followed with seven yards. A 13-yard pass to Hill put Arizona at Utah's seven-yard line, but Scott fumbled the exchange on the next play and the Arizona drive was stalled with the Wildcats going into the half up 17-14.

Arizona was able to force a three and out to start the half and got the ball on its own 20-yard line. The drive started with offensive pass interference on Hill and after a short gain by Scott, he was dropped for no gain. On third and 17, it looked as if Carey had the first down on the ground, but slipped a yard short of the marker and Arizona had to punt.

Utah started on its own 35-yard line with a 26-yard pass to Anderson followed by a three and 11-yard run by White. Two plays later, the Utes gained eight yards despite fumbling on a double reverse. From the Arizona 12-yard line, Utah threw an incomplete pass and followed it with a three-yard run by White. On third and seven, Anderson gained two yards and the Utes had to settle for a 25-yard field goal, which tied the game at 17.

Arizona was forced into a three and out and punted for only the second time of the game, giving the Utes the ball on its own 34. Three plays into the drive, Scott caught an 11-yard pass and White added 13 on the ground. Wilson then hit Luke Matthews for 15 yards to the Arizona 26, but the Utes were called for holding on the next play.

On first down, Jake Fischer stopped White for a loss of one, but Wilson hit Christopher for a 36-yard touchdown, as the extra point made it 24-17 with 1:59 left.

The Wildcats took over on their own 25-yard line and were forced into a third down where Scott hit Hill for a 19-yard gain. Carey proceeded to gain 13 yards to the Utah 44 and after an incomplete pass, he picked up 16 more yards on the ground. Jenkins picked up three yards on first down to end the third quarter with Arizona on Utah's 27.

Scott found Dan Buckner for a 15-yard gain and Jenkins added seven more on the ground. Scott then ran for no gain and on third down, Arizona was topped. However, Utah was called for a personal foul for hands to the face and Arizona's drive was kept alive with first and goal from the two. On the first play after the penalty, Jenkins bounced of the defensive line and ran it in from two, as the extra point tied the game at 24 with 13:55 left.

Arizona forced a three and out and although Utah tried to fake a punt, Kylan Butler came up with the stop and gave the Wildcats the ball on Utah's 41. On the first play from scrimmage, Carey gained 20 yards on the ground and after a short run by Scott, Hill was able to catch an 18-yard touchdown pass with the extra point making it 31-24 with 11:07 left in the fourth quarter.

Utah was able to pick up a first down through the air, but Arizona forced a punt shortly after and took possession on its own 27. Carey was able to pick up four on the ground and Scott got seven for the first down. However, Utah forced a third and short in which Scott threw an incomplete pass, forcing Arizona to punt to Utah's seven.

After an incomplete pass, David Rolf caught a three-yard pass and then picked up the first down with an 11-yard grab. White gained four yards on the ground and then picked up two yards to get to third and four. On third down, Arizona was able to knock down the pass at the line of scrimmage. On fourth down, Utah went for it and the three-yard pass to Scott fell short, giving Arizona possession with 3:29 left.

On first down, Carey gained 20 yards to Utah's ten-yard line. Arizona ran simple running plays, allowing Bonano to make a 24-yard field goal that sealed the game with 1:15 left.
