Beneventi Continuing Magical Season

Benet Academy (Ill.) sophomore QB Jack Beneventi has had a big year and one of the nation's top programs is already taking notice.

This weekend, Benet Academy looks to continue their improbable run through the state playoffs. The Redwings are 10-1, almost an exact flipping of their record a year ago.

A big reason has been sophomore quarterback Jack Beneventi, a talented 6'6, 185-lb passer who has stepped in and stepped up for his team.

"This season has been special for our program and school," he explained. "Last year, our team went 1-8, so we're flipping that around. We're all real excited about how it's going. We expected to have a good season, and we knew we had a unique team."

Inheriting the reigns for a sophomore is not always easy, but the varsity adjustment for Beneventi came with a lot of help from his older classmates.

"This summer I was able to do a lot of workouts with the juniors that will become seniors, so I was able to meet with the team and the seniors were really supportive and really helped me. Being a sophomore and playing up helped me a lot."

Because it is his first year, colleges have just started to find out about this talented young player. One school he has heard quite a bit from is Notre Dame.

"I took two unofficals so far with them, so I'm in contact with them right now. I saw the Miami game in Chicago and the Stanford game. That was actually a great experience. I got there early, so I got to see College Gameday. That was really cool to see that. The atmosphere, how many fans were there, and the tradition before the games and the excitement during the games was great. The stadium was packed and the way the Stanford game turned out was great as well."

It might be a little ways off, but if a Notre Dame offer were to appear at some point, they would have a supporter very close to Beneventi.

"I grew up to them most of my life. My grandpa from Georgia is a huge Notre Dame fan, so he sends me Notre Dame apparel."

That may be Grandpa's first choice, but Beneventi, ironically, hopes he hears from that school he saw the Irish defeat.

"My dream school is Stanford, so that's my dream if they ever contacted me."

Benet and Beneventi take on Downer's Grove North in the state quarterfinals this week. Scout.com will be on hand with coverage of the game.
