The identity of Andrew Luck’s primary targets has been an evolving storyline throughout training camp. Receivers Ryan Whalen and Doug Baldwin, two of the team’s best last fall, now ply their talents in the NFL. Griff Whalen (no relation to Ryan), a wide receiver who has garnered great reviews from the coaching staff, will likely figure prominently among the Cardinal receiving corps this fall.

Following Sunday’s open practice, Griff Whalen spoke to members of the media about his early impressions from camp and the progress that the offense has made so far.

How did you guys enjoy the open practice?

Griff Whalen: We were all pretty excited to have some live periods and get out in front of some fans, make it a game. I think it went pretty well.

Did it give you a boost, having an audience like this? It was a pretty good turnout.

GW: Yeah, absolutely. It was nice to see a lot of fans out here, giving us support. After a long camp, it’s good to get out and have a game-like situation.

Talking about the wide receiver rotation, you guys have a whole bunch of people. You’re mixing in on first, second and third string. Are you getting enough reps out there? How’s it all coming together?

GW: Yeah, we’re fighting for reps. It’s a very competitive group and I think we’re going to produce well this year. We’ve been doing pretty well, and like you said, a lot of numbers, which is nice. We’re getting a lot of rotation, a lot of guys are getting looks.

Can you talk a little bit about the backup quarterback situation?

GW: I thought they looked pretty good today—we’re pretty happy with how those guys are doing. It’s nice to see some competition at the backup position. Josh Nunes was a little limited today, but it’s nice to see that it’s not just handed to anybody. Those three guys are all competing for it—they’re all making each other better.

Are you satisfied with the way your game is coming along? Are you ready for the season?

GW: Yeah, absolutely. I’ve been thinking about it at night since last season. It’s been a long offseason and we’ve been working hard—our whole team has—so we’re all ready to go.

In practice, you’re going against the second-string defense usually. Talk about some of the younger guys at corner that you’re going against and what they look like.

GW: The DBs are looking really good; I think they’ve come a long way in the last couple of years. A lot of the young guys, the incoming freshmen look good too, so that’s nice to see. I’m not sure what their rotation will look like but we might see some of them playing this year, which would be good.

Can you name one or two guys that really stick out to you?

GW: Wayne Lyons definitely sticks out a lot as an incoming freshman, just for being so young and inexperienced. He just looks very comfortable, making a lot of big plays, and just looks very natural out there.
